An unused back paddock has become a pathway to local employment for students east of Melbourne. On Wednesday, dozens of students ditched their textbooks and stepped out into the drizzle to take part in the school’s first harvest.
Though just eight students in years 10 to 12 have opted in this year, they were relishing the chance to escape their classrooms for a full day on Wednesday. Soon, students will observe how the grapes are processed into wine at nearby winery Yarrawood, then later lead the marketing strategy and design the label for the finished product.
The empty back paddock was planted with vines three years ago, in a first for a state school in Victoria.Principal Scott Tully agreed that his students deserved more opportunities to pursue a career in the region they had grown up in.
