Pregnant women are finding themselves excluded from the life-saving benefits of a COVID-19 vaccination. This is an entirely avoidable tragedy

have launched Examine, a new weekly science newsletter written by national science reporter Liam Mannix. The sixth instalment is below and you can sign up for freeMedicine has a long history of systematically excluding women from trials of potentially life-saving drugs.

We know vaccines are safe and effective for men and women. We don’t have those answers for pregnant women. Now pregnant women find themselves excluded from the life-saving benefits of a COVID-19 vaccination. Because they were not part of clinical trials, we cannot know with certainty if vaccines are safe and effective for them.

This is an entirely avoidable tragedy. It is a problem experts have been pleading with drug companies to fix for years. It potentially spurs vaccine hesitancy.“It’s historical. And it does not apply to only vaccine trials. Pregnant women are often excluded from trials of new drugs and vaccines,” Associate Professor Michelle Giles, from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Monash University, tells me.

Great photo of a pregnant woman there team...

The pregnant woman receiving the jab in the photo is one of my favourite people

They can always find themselves volunteering for the vaccination during pregnancy trials

Come on. The vaccines don't save lives, they're built on lies. Test subjects don't have their lives saved, they're test subjects like mice

PM: Commonwealth has done ‘the heavy lifting’ in response to COVID-19 | Sky News AustraliaPrime Minster Scott Morrison says the federal government’s direct economic support of around $251 billion is one of the “most significant COVID responses” in the world.\n\n“All up the Australian government, as at the last fiscal update has committed some $267 billion to our COVID-19 response,” he said. \n\n“That’s 13.5 per cent of the size of our economy, of GDP.\n\n“On the direct economic support alone it’s 12.6 per cent, some $251 billion, and this rates as one of the most significant COVID responses anywhere in the advanced world'.\n\nMr Morrison said the states and territories have also made a valuable contribution to the economic response, committing an additional $122 billion.\n\n“But I think even they would say it’s fair to say the heavy lifting has been done by the Commonwealth over this past year,' he said. \n\n“So it has been federal taxpayers that have underwritten Australia’s COVID response at every level of government in this country.' \n\nThe prime minster said it is now time - in the 'post-emergency' phase - to switch to medium and longer-term economic policies because it is not “sustainable” to run the Australian economy on taxpayer’s money “forever”. \n ScottMorrisonMP ScottMorrisonMP What about securing vaccines?
