A countryside emergency with a puppy brings home the depth of his new owner’s love.

I’d come to stay a few nights at a relative’s farm just outside Melbourne with my new dog, Chips – a handsome, naughty, six-month-old Boston terrier purchased for too much money in the height of lockdown. It was really my partner’s idea, but I’d happily gone along with adopting the adorable dog, who was the pick of a litter of eight pedigree boys.

We even purchased a $359 Furbo, a Dalek-style camera unit that records the living room 24 hours a day and shoots out treats via a remote app, should we ever eventually have to leave him home alone. When we arrived at the farm for his first rural getaway, little Chips was beside himself.

“We really should pick him up,” I said anxiously as the beasts started to bare their yellow teeth behind the fence. When I moved to grab skittish Chips, the inevitable happened. Our handsome, naughty, seven-kilogram pup shot under the fence and into the alpacas’ den like a fox, desperately out of our reach and dangerously within theirs.
