So shocking is the case of 18-year-old Alex Braes, it's prompted a group of clinicians who worked at the regional hospital where he was treated to blow the whistle on what they believe are systemic failures.

Alex's father wheeled him into the emergency department and a nurse observed him through a window and asked him to wait.

She told Four Corners that by this stage, Alex was desperately unwell, yet he was again left waiting. The nurse did not provide the pillow but left her post to go out into the waiting room to check on Alex. She noticed he was sweaty and unwell and moved him into a bed in the emergency department.Thirty-three hours after he had first presented to Broken Hill Hospital, hospital staff finally did vital-signs observations.

This hospital is even more negligent towards their patients than those who covered this story can possibly realise. The reporters who covered this story don't know the half of it.

This is an absolute disgrace! There is a serious misalignment of priorities by the MPs (ref AirHoward83) and health depts. Not that it’s anything new - Indigenous health has been as bad for many decades 🙄 😠

The steady demise of our public health system underfunded and under staffed pushing us to go private.... Why does Australia want to become America?

BradHazzard GladysB ScottMorrisonMP GregHuntMP this is completely on your heads. Get your priorities right.

What an absolute joke. Stories like this and we have our politicians giving themselves raises and flying on private plans and helicopters to attend some w*k-fest. At some point we have to say enough

You can blame 'the system' all you want - but this was a failure of individuals not doing their job. You can blame organisatiobal culture - but it is individuals that buy into culture. Basic vitals would have picked up the infection and triggered treatment to save this man.

Too many sh*t doctors out there, when they don’t know they just send you away. They don’t like to admit they don’t know.

This is breathtakingly horrific, we are supposed to be the clever country, not a third-world country. Let's see the government reply to this, or will they just ignore it ?

4corners How's that stadium going in Sydney GladysB?

This is a most heartbreaking story! 😢🥺

Terribly sad story. However, our hospitals famously make numerous mistakes - it is quite amazing that more cases do not end up this way

'We didn't have the numbers': Hong Kong police prevent protesters from taking airportHong Kong police have been successful in preventing unrest from choking the Chinese territory's airport, helped in part by a partial closure of the city's subway stations. Quote: Protestors 'demanding CCTV footage' 😂 First they demolish every camera they can find, and then demand video recordings. That's a classic. When Hong Kong rioters 'take' a building it afterwards looks something like this. If you don't have the numbers, you need to be smarter. I don't think the protestors are lacking smarts.
