Australians are desperate to see each other again and if this technology is adopted widely, it could see the easing of social gathering restrictions, writes Ben Grubb.

The government says it has done enough to protect Australians' privacy when it comes to its coronavirus tracing app - and it looks like it might have got the balance right.

However, in Singapore, where a similar app was designed, the biggest issue was not privacy but the battery life of phones being drained and the requirement that it be open on iPhone user's screens at all times. This resulted in it being installed by just 12 per cent of Singaporeans.Australia thinks it has overcome this hurdle on iPhones, but scepticism remains.

Nope, not for me. I don't 'you'.

unlucky TheOnion

The LNP want to declare Australia is open for business & we'll all rush out & start to make/spend money. Bugger StayHomeSaveLives They don't care if we loose people as long as they don't know them personally. Does Morrison really want a second coming? It won't be JC. auspol

get in line now!!!.....

How do I take my phone with me, and stop people using their Bluetooth to spy on my activities without my consent?

umm Ben, are you forgetting the Assistance and Access Act? the app can be modified to contain & do whatever the gov want and everyone involved are all legally bound to secrecy. so guarantees of the app's privacy & safety are meaningless, no? it would be illegal to say otherwise.

The sheep will download

Could someone explain why they are worried about this app but cool with Google maps? Google admit they sell that data and we all seem ok with it.

Many many folk voted for the Liberals - so surely you trust them with your data ?

Without guaranteed safegards it a Trojan Horse app.

I’m not opposed to the app but the Australian Department of Health is Not a software development company they don’t build apps. So before I download, who actually built the app, what’s their track record, app release plan and what measures are they taking to monitor security?

Absolutely, unless your a senior citizen 70-80 plus year old who are not computers or smartphone savvy. They're the irrelevant Australians?

The Government continues to reference that the app is based on the Singapore version, clearly theirs failed and they never got more than 20% take up. So what’s the go?

Nonsense

Aww good on you the Age. Doing Morrison's bidding for him. What are you a propaganda machine or a newspaper make up your mind. People don't trust the LNP and for good reason.

Hook, line aaandddd sinker. Henny Penny.

🤥🤥🤥🤥

How’s everyone Facebook, google searches, social media, location services and google maps going.....

...who the fuck would take this government at their word?

It’s already been decompiled and nothing in the code shows it’s doing anything that hasn’t been said already. It will allow us to get back to normality faster just get it.

Nice propaganda article You’ll do well with the federal government

I’m desperate to stay alive so I’m not going anywhere that’s not my home for some considerable time to come.

Don't think I am desperate to see anybody if it means that I don't contract Covid 19 or give it to anybody else.

Metadata & Anti-Encryption makes me never touch a single thing this government does.

What a load of complete and utterly deranged crap. Healthy people cannot make healthy people sick and sick people normally stay home because they are sick. It's a shame all our media left the reality field and became deranged propagandists.

no - this is surveillance -

This Australian will be staying the fcuk at home.

No. Not worth the potential misuse. Having worked in IT in our major hospitals, no one cares about data protection. Administrative convenience trumps due process every time. Then there's the private Dr's offices, even worse.

Downloaded

Regarding privacy, I just saw this in another (also today) article about the app. Dear journalists from The Age, don't do that, even if the user shared her screenshot you should have blurred her number:

People won’t take it up. Regardless how much it’s pushed by the media and tv people.

Dutton is the thorn in the flesh.

You can't test what isn't actually there.

Australian government launches controversial coronavirus tracing app amid privacy concerns'Don't worry. Your information will only be shared by contact mappers &the NSA. What could possibly go wrong. But we're only doing this because we're so committed to health outcomes, that's why we're also REOPENING SCHOOLS & NOT STRIVING FOR ELIMINATION '. Not buying it sorry 'COVID-19 cases and the people they come in contact with.' What, people with COVID-19 aren't people anymore? 'You are a host to the disease now. There is no you, only disease.' Would be better to support widespread testing ... I don’t trust the Federal Government and won’t be using it; testing with geographical info on spikes is enough for me
