Scott Morrison’s condemnation of a disturbing and doctored tweet by a Chinese government official is the “biggest ratcheting up” of rhetoric against China by an Australian prime minister, according to Andrew Clennell. The prime minister responded to an image posted by a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson which showed an Australian soldier holding a knife to the throat of a child by labelling it “falsified” and “repugnant”.

The images – which has not been censored by Twitter despite being fake– was published by China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian who said he was “shocked by murder of Afghan civilians & prisoners by Australian soldiers”. Mr Clennell said the tweet was to the “biggest ratcheting up yet of Chinese rhetoric” against Australia and it comes amid ongoing and building trade tensions between the two nations. “It’s hard not to get a bit anxious about this,” he said.
