The AFL had encouraged umpires to pay more holding-the-ball free kicks in a league directive in late May but, after an early spike, this round had the lowest average since round two.

The contentious holding-the-ball interpretation has taken another turn, this time with the number of free kicks falling dramatically over the latest round of football.

However, there were signs over the weekend that umpires were allowing players more time to release the ball than in previous weeks. The in-season change of interpretation came about in part to strengthen the duty of care players have to each other, for the longer the tackle, the more chance a player would be slung to the turf and suffer a head knock.

Kane said last week: “We’re really pleased that players have been able to adjust their tackling technique to protect opposition players and protect their peers.”
