The Coalition has an unpopular leader and a slender policy program, while Labor is keeping its plans sealed in case they go soggy over the next six weeks, writes Parnell Palme McGuinness | OPINION

Ever since Kellogg invented cornflakes to discourage masturbation, breakfast cereal has been credited with extraordinary powers. Generations of Australians have gobbled the “iron man food” myth along with their sugary processed wheatie shapes. Nan poured them and dad served them and mum probably schlepped them home from the supermarket. Challenge their nutritional goodness and you’re taking on a lifetime of emotion, not just the science behind the junky pap.

It is a remarkable turnaround. In 2019, Morrison was the star of his own campaign. The more visible he was, glad-handing around the country in his daggy cap with a booming interrobang – “How good is Australia!” – the more Australians forgot the decade of civil war within the Liberal Party. That war between the moderate and conservative wings of the party was most visible to punters as a drawn-out personal stoush between Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull. Though sometimes it seemed the antagonism between the two men was not just an expression of personal ambition. The factions fell behind them because each represented a set of ideas.

If Morrison does allow his team to take the lead, he might be able to swing a breakfast cereal contest and get voters to cast a ballot based on brand. It would likely work in hisIf the two main political parties were branded boxes of sugary snack food, the Coalitionit may not be reasonable, but even when the Liberal Party is haemorrhaging taxpayerOn the other hand, while it may not be fair and reasonable, voters will always believe Labor is full of wholegrain human kindness.

Voters will look towards Clive Palmer ‘with some scepticism’UAP is effectively LNP . Their preferences goes to LNP before ALP. They have same miner donations and support like LNP. Same climate sceptics, same backdoor deals and stick fingers at civility and research You vote UAP you support LNP thru the backdoor. How does he know? He hopes this will be the case! Nothing like planting ideas in people's heads & sadly there aren't many free logical thinkers left after 2 years of government media gaslight activity across the nation. We all need to know where a vote for Clive Palmer really goes. Hope the ALP can clearly convey this during their campaign. Too many people don’t understand the system & preferences. A vote for UAP is a foxy vote for the LNP. Clive is campaigning for the LNP. auspol AlboForPM
