John Gay, the man who was at the forefront of Gunns' controversial plans to build a pulp mill in Tasmania's Tamar Valley, has died.

Mr Gay doubled the size of the company and made it one of the largest hardwood sawmillers in the Southern Hemisphere.Mr Gay was at the forefront of Gunns' controversial plans to build a pulp mill in Tasmania's Tamar Valley and he attracted criticism along the way.After attending boarding school in Hobart he went to work at his father's sawmill at the age of 15.to manage its Waverley and Summerhill plants.

"He made a great contribution to our state, and a great contribution to northern Tasmania," Mr Gray said. In 2003, over an infamous meal at a Hobart restaurant with then-deputy premier Paul Lennon, it emerged he had bigger plans, for a $2 billion pulp mill.Mr Gay sued 20 environmental activists for millions of dollars in damages.He withdrew the project from Tasmania's independent assessment process in 2007.
