Bob Hawke’s widow, Blanche d’Alpuget, has opened up for the first time since his death to reveal how the former prime minister spent his final year. 9News

“He was more than prepared. He was very keen. Two days before he died we had a friend over here, a very old friend, and he said, ‘It's not long now. It's very soon’,” she said.

She also explained that, while Mr Hawke was adamant about physically voting at a polling booth in this year’s election rather than submitting a postal vote, he was unable to do so – dying two days before ballot day. “It was lovely and it was great. They sat and they yarned about old times and Paul came a few times,” she said.
