Everything old in TV-land is new again. Even the way that we can watch shows for free, without the need for a subscription to a streaming platform and with obligatory ad breaks, on network catch-up sites, or via new ‘FAST’ channels. FAST channels are just like those of yesteryear, programmed to run like a linear channel and dedicated to a specific show and Tubi are prime movers in the burgeoning FAST market, while the Seven Network’s 7Plus site also carry a plethora of such channels.
It’s perhaps a paradox that the streaming revolution has also given traditional TV – as well as traditional ways of watching TV – a shot in the arm, even more so at a time when cost-of-living pressures may be putting the pinch on streaming subscriptions. With that in mind, here’s a handy guide to the best shows that can be viewed right now for free.
Fourteen episodes of Rowan Atkinson’s tour-de-force comedy Mr Bean are now on free streaming platform Tubi. Tubi is a wild split-personality of a service: for no charge you get access to a vast ocean of startlingly cheap and often weirdly enjoyable trash, but also to the odd bona fide classic that has somehow found its way onto the books. Rowan Atkinson’s tour de force performance as the titular near-wordless oddball falls into this category.
Another of Tubi’s unexpected treasures, this 60s sitcom is, unsurprisingly, a little dated, but as the launching pad for the stellar careers of Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore, as well as creator Carl Reiner, it’s a must-see for any aficionado of classic telly. Many of the most familiar tropes of American sitcom can be traced to this one.
