Close to 40 per cent of recent university graduates say they are not making full use of their qualifications

The University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne were on Thursday named among the world’s top ten for graduate employability.

Melbourne University economist Jeff Borland said the new figures from The Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching 2021 Graduate Outcomes Survey released this week showed how difficult it had become in the past 15 years for graduates to get jobs in their field of study. The most common reason employed graduates gave in the QILT survey for why they were not fully utilising their skills and education three years after graduation was job satisfaction with the current job. About 17 per cent said they did not have enough work experience and 14 per cent said there were no suitable jobs in their area of expertise.Professor Borland said 15 years ago, university graduates could get jobs matched to their university qualifications much sooner than they could now.

Victoria University higher education research Peter Hurley said the QILT survey suggested it was getting harder for university graduates to make the transition into highly skilled employment. The University of Sydney retained its global fourth-place rank, followed by The University of Melbourne in eighth position, after placing 7th the previous year. The University of New South Wales was placed 32nd, down from 27th among 550 institutions ranked according to a survey of 50,000 employers.

And some are stuck in their home countries, who arent even getting the chance 😐

That's comical. A university supposedly training people in critical thought who instead become corporate slaves in capitalist driven society. Well I'd rather a free mind than a job

“full use” 🤷‍♂️

They will take what they've learnt to whatever work they end up in - that's the value.

Born out of the droves of academics that invent pointless courses. Be wise uni students. A job outcome is the goal, do a course that has an actual job at the end. Don’t follow fantasies.

Ever has it been so...

Recent graduates often think they have skills and that their qualifications have real value. For many, outside certain sciences and engineering, it's a credential, not a qualification.

Poll reveals Australians want net-zero emissions ‘and nuclear power’: MurrayWhich poll? Published in 'the nine papers'. Papers owned by Peter Costello's Channel 9? Or nine individual papers? Do you have no confidence in the organisation running the poll, so you're trying to hide it? Do you know what journalists are supposed to do? Have you ever met one? Most Australians ignorant of how much smaller & safer these are nowadays and this is a great means to achieving the environmental benefits most Australians want. Most Australians ignorant of the cost of abolishing fossil fuel energy sources too despite what alarmists say🤔
