BHP has followed the lead of Australian tech companies Atlassian, Canva and CultureAmp to provide financial support to its US employees who need to travel from their home state to access abortion services.

, Australian companies have introduced policies to support workers in states that have banned or heavily restricted the procedure.

“Employees who need to travel interstate for family planning and reproductive care will be eligible for additional personal leave and reimbursement of travel and expenses.”Texas was traditionally the heart of BHP’s American business but employee numbers in the lone star state have declined since the petroleum business was merged with Woodside.

A spokesman for Western Australia shipbuilder Austal, which operates a shipyard in Alabama, said the company would be “supportive of our employees’ needs and circumstances” while considering its position.
