Bob Iger’s return to the CEO role at Disney has brought scepticism and praise. But overseas and local examples suggest the comeback kid can work.

At entertainment giant Disney, owner of both Star Wars and Marvel franchises, almost every hero gets a sequel. The return of Bob Iger, w, suggests that policy even extends to the executive suite.

Disney shares are down 38 per cent this year, and while Chapek made several missteps that infuriated staff – including a management restructure that robbed the leaders of Disney’s TV and film units of authority, and a weak reaction to the introduction of laws in Florida banning the discussion of gender identity in schools – the biggest problems the company faces can be traced back to Iger’s rule.

after just 18 months. More recently, Andrew Forrest has returned to an executive role at Fortescue Metals Group after a long stint as non-executive chairman; this too is supposed to be an interim appointment, but Forrest has made it clear he will not rush the selection of the new CEO.
