Don’t expect any controversy or crime in the wholesome Ralph & Katie, but it has a fine sense of comic timing.

, about a dysfunctional family with a young boy, Joe, on the autism spectrum at its centre, won widespread acclaim for its portrayal of an often misunderstood condition. Although it was based on the Israeli series, Bowker was largely inspired by the 12 years he spent teaching children with learning disabilities, including autism, before his writing took off.Now he’s written a spin-off drama-comedy focusing on two characters who featured in that program’s third season.

In season three, Ralph married his girlfriend Katie , despite a lot of fussing from both their respective parents – both Ralph and Katie have Down syndrome.picks up with the pair happily married in their new home, navigating life as newlyweds., there’s little tension here beyond married life, and the focus is on the stuff of everyday life, rather than the disabilities that the leads live with.

Even for a Lakes District-set series, this is cosy viewing; its most risqué moment coming when the decorations for a Valentine’s Day fundraising event are mixed up with those for a Hens’ party and the assembled locals at the church hall have to sip their drinks using penis-shaped straws. But wholesome viewing doesn’t mean dull, and Ralph & Katie is a big-hearted drama – and both Gordy and Harrop do a fine line in comic timing. Just don’t expect any controversy or crime.
