The 2021 census is expected to be like no other in the history of data collection in Australia. Here's a look at how the Australian Bureau of Statistics is planning its rollout amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

— said the fallout from five years ago had left the ABS in good stead to respond to the challenges of the present moment."There are some changes to the census this year … but I think most of those changes are good improvements and certainly a lot of the lessons learned from the so-called 2016 #CensusFail have prepared us for a pandemic-proof census this year."The census can be completed online, including on mobile devices, or through a hard paper copy.

"There certainly is a risk, given the COVID-19 impacts and restrictions in place, that people's interaction with the census could be impacted adversely," she said. But Dr Allen said there was a small "army" of community-based support staff who had helped "spread the word" about the census, getting the message out to the public about the importance of taking part.

"There are a range of checks and balances that the Bureau of Statistics conducts during census and after census to ensure that the data is robust and reflects Australia and the population in Australia."While there are no specific coronavirus-related questions in the census, it will still tell us a lot about how the Australian population has been impacted.

"We've got quite a large proportion of the Australian population in lockdown — they will be in lockdown, their jobs will be affected, their family life will be affected, their incomes potentially — there'll be evidence of financial stress and so on."Dr Allen said population data would help guide future policies amid the pandemic.
