Anthony Joshua has made light work of Francis Ngannou in a stunning display of brute power, knocking out the former UFC champion in the second round of their exhibition bout in Saudi Arabia.
Kiwi former world champion Parker was knocked down in the third round by a thudding straight left from southpaw Zhang, but survived to the bell and responded well by outworking his 40-year-old opponent in the middle part of the fight. 40-year-old Zhang had been written off before a sensational 2023 saw him dominate Joe Joyce in April and again in September to take his record to 26-1-1 and claim the WBO interim heavyweight title.
Neither man were able to let their hands go in a tactical, restrained start to the bout. But the fight began to ignite in the third round with Parker upping his output and Zhang landing a number of short, chopping shots. But late in the round, Parker landed a huge right hand of his own that sent Zhang wheeling backwards, before ratcheting up the pressure in the dying stages.
But halfway through the round, Parker was sent down to one knee with a short right hook on the side of the head – the seemingly innocuous punch so full of power that Parker looked stunned. The 10th was one of Parker’s best, with Zhang seemingly beginning to wilt. The Chinese star backed up for the first time in the fight, trying to draw Parker into a risky attack whereby he could unload his thunderous left hand. But Parker remained measured.“He’s dangerous for the first 30 seconds… you’ve got to be very careful. After that he’s tired.”
Now New Zealand’s Joseph Parker takes on China’s Zhilei Zhang in a huge heavyweight bout, with Anthony Joshua set to face UFC great Francis Ngannou up next in a $100m mega-bout. Australian heavyweight star Justis Huni has won the most important fight of his short career, surviving a 10 round epic against South African Kevin Lerena.
