The Matildas coach waited until the team was 3-1 down in the 82nd minute to inject fresh legs into the contest and only made two changes.
“That shouldn’t happen you’ve got to make the decisions, you’ve got to be clear and the staff around him, who are pretty inexperienced I know that, they’ve just not stood up when their team needed them,” he told NewsDay host Tom Connell on Friday. “Did I find the right time for the subs tonight? We did get a massive effect positively when we did it. Did we get that because I did it in the right moment? Or should I have done it earlier, and we could have played longer with that positive effect?” he said.
The Matildas opened the scoring but conceded shortly after at about six minutes into first half injury time.“It changed the team talk really because Nigeria were about to talk into their changerooms on a low but they go in on a high after that goal and then second half things started to really fall apart,” he said. The loss means Australia must beat Canada in the final group stage match to ensure they progress into the round of 16 and it looks like they will still be without captain Sam Kerr.
“It comes down to self-belief this is where the coaching staff are going to earn their money by turning these girls around mentally.”
