COMMENT Text, don't call: the new phone etiquette

Right now, it’s happening with phone calls. A fair number of us believe it’s no longer acceptable to just phone someone out of the blue, without texting first.Credit:This might be news for some of you but if you are younger or lean to being an introvert, you’re probably nodding along right now.

Sure, you might have one or two close relationships where it’s fine to just pop by, but it’s the exception rather than the rule.Phones are ubiquitous. Research by Deloitte in 2018 suggests 89 per cent of Australians own a smartphone and 96 per cent own a phone of some kind. Even more interesting was the intensity of the reaction. There were some supporters, but an awful lot of people were utterly horrified. Here is a selected sample of the responses:

“No no no no I don’t want anyone thinking it’s okay to do that to me. I don’t even answer my WIFE if she doesn’t text first, I just assume it’s a buttdial. Sure, it could ‘change the world’ … by making lots of people have a panic attack.” It’s the very nature of a visit or a phone call that it’s interruptive, whereas text messages, messaging apps and email don’t need to happen in real time. Or as one person on Twitter put it, “a call is a demand, a text is a gift”.First, it makes our roads less safe. I have never, ever texted while I’m driving but I often see other drivers doing it and we know it’s a factor in many accidents. If I receive a text when I’m driving, I feel anxious in case it’s urgent.

Seeing someone face to face is optimal because it engages all our senses and allows communication through body language, tone of voice and touch, not just words.

Okay besides the fact that the thumbnail photo lady is on her phone upside down, Text, don't call has been the etiquette for about 10 years now. Remember, if your phone makes any sounds ever, you're 100 years old.

Men, better idea, go mgtow ! You will save a lot of money and hassle.

If ABBA were still making songs today they'd write one called Text, Text, Text.
