Move comes hours after supreme court allowed strict law known as SB4 to take effect, giving state police powers to arrest migrants suspected of crossing the border illegally

The supreme court had earlier allowed Texas to enforce a strict immigration law known as SB4 permitting authorities to prosecute migrants suspected of illegally crossing the border. The supreme court had earlier allowed Texas to enforce a strict immigration law known as SB4 permitting authorities to prosecute migrants suspected of illegally crossing the border.

that gives police broad powers to arrest migrants suspected of crossing the border illegally, as court battles over the measure played out. The supreme court didn’t address whether the law is constitutional and the measure was sent to the appeals court, which made its ruling late on Tuesday. The Department of Homeland Security said the federal government would also continue the court challenge to the law that will “further complicate” the job of its “already strained” workforce. The agency won’t assist in any efforts to enforce the law known as Senate Bill 4 .

The law is considered by opponents to be the most dramatic attempt by a state to police immigration since an Arizona law more than a decade ago, portions of which were struck down by the supreme court. Critics have also said the Texas law could lead to civil rights violations and racial profiling.
