Electric car pioneer Tesla has left the car makers lobby group, claiming it was spreading false information about the Albanese government's new vehicle emissions standards. Volvo spin-off Polestar is also considering its membership. Experts suggest Tesla has a vested interest in the policy remaining unchanged, as it stands to make $200 million from selling credits to fuel-driven car manufacturers trying to meet the emissions caps.

The Albanese government’s new vehicle emissions standards have sparked a war among manufacturers after electric car pioneer Tesla quit the key car makers lobby group claiming it was peddling falsehoods about the policy. Major electric car maker Volvo spin-off Polestar is also assessing whether it will stay on as a member of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

But industry experts said Tesla, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, also had a vested interest in the policy going ahead without amendment, given it stands to make about $200 million by selling credits to manufacturers of fuel-driven cars trying to meet the emissions caps the government will impose. In the United States in 2023, Tesla made $US1.79 billion ($2.7 billion), or almost a third of its profit, from selling credits to other manufacturers under that nation’s emissions schem
