A series of colourised and renewed images first taken from the Pacific Ocean theatre of battle in the second World War have been released almost 75 years on from the end of conflict.
In this image from July 1944, troops and vehicles were snapped en route for the invasion of Cape Sansapor, New Guinea. The dramatic photos were originally captured in black and white but have been painstakingly colourised to realise the true heroism and horrendous conditions where Japanese and American forces clashed. The USS Tennessee was photographed bombarding the island of Okinawa with her enormous guns, as nervous troops were carried to the invasion beaches.
In a bid to stem the Japanese advance, the US military decided on a strategy of 'island-hopping' - fighting for control of strategic islands along a path toward the Japanese home islands, bringing US bombers within range and preparing for a possible invasion. The captivating images also captured sobering moments between Japanese prisoners and US soldiers.
