Hundreds of thousands of Australians had to wait seven weeks or more for elective surgery procedures as hospitals worked through backlogs during the pandemic, new data shows. 7NEWS

was 48 days in the 2020/21 financial year, an increase of nine days compared to the previous year, new data released on Tuesday shows.

The wait was even longer for Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders, half of whom waited at least 57 days, according to figures in theThey were also over-represented on surgical waiting lists, the AIHW says, making up 4.1 per cent of the people waiting for surgery and 3.3 per cent of the population.

This also created backlogs in people requiring surgery, with 893,000 patients added to waiting lists in the year up to June 30, up 55,000 on the previous year. Those waiting for a tonsil removal , treatment for varicose veins and knee replacements saw the greatest increase in median wait times.

COVID-19 to be used as the excuse for the health system. Seems legit? LOL

I was first booked in to have cat 2 surgery in September. I arrived and then was sent home 5 minutes later due to no beds as they had increased Covid patients - I have had it cancelled 3 times and am still waiting.

Can it also be prominently displayed that Elective surgery means the patient is very unlikely to die if it is postponed, not that it is for trivial/cosmetic/pain-free conditions
