The board of Tennis Australia has acknowledged “lessons to learn” from the Novak Djokovic visa debacle but backed chief executive Craig Tiley as the organisation seeks to move past criticism of how it handled the world No. 1’s failed attempt to play in the Australian Open.
Mr Colbeck said the federal government gave “very clear” and consistent advice to TA about the vaccination requirements for someone to enter the country, and it was up to TA to explain why Djokovic was seemingly of the belief he would be allowed to come. “Tennis Australia has been working closely with both the federal and Victorian government for the past year to deliver a COVID safe Australian Open for the players, staff, and fans,” it said.“Embarking on a major international sporting event during a global pandemic that continues to evolve and challenge us all, is profoundly demanding for all stakeholders.
