A series of new ads for Telstra features Australian voices and remote Australian locations. But it was made in Eastern Europe - and local creatives are angry.

Most people who see Telstra’s new ads featuring talking animals and plants as representatives of Australia’s most remote locations are likely to respond with amusement and delight. But for the nation’s small community of stop-motion animators, the response is more like a slap in the face, delivered one painstaking frame at a time.

The director was Jeff Low, a Canadian, while the animation director was Englishman Tobias Fouracre, whose experience includes Wes Anderson’s animated features“It was kind of a little superstar team,” says Walker. “I know some might wonder why we didn’t do it all here. The truth is, we always approach everything in that way of ‘who are the best people to bring this to life and capture this in the best possible way’. So ultimately, that’s how we went.

One animator who spoke anonymously out of fear that being identified would see him blackballed by advertising agencies said: “There’s not a lot of stop-motion craft-based work being written for advertising, so when you see something like this, you go, ‘I wish I could have worked on that’.”
