Teens sentenced over knife attack at UOW amid fears for international students

An international student who had a knife held to her throat and was forced to kiss an teenage assailant's shoes at the University of Wollongong says she has been left traumatised by the incident.A student association says there has been a rise in attacks on international students and wants guidance on what those targeted should do.

"She held the knife at my neck, she had a hoodie on her face — her voice was pretty muffled when she said she wanted my cash and phone," Ms Singh said. In a report to the court the 14-year-old said she was high on ice and cannabis during the offending and expressed remorse for the incidents, calling herself a "monster".

Asian International Students of Australia vice-president and University of Wollongong mentor Nav Mittal said attacks against international students were increasing."They used to harass or abuse, but they never put someone at a knifepoint.""If they report they think nothing will happen," he said."The main thing I want to know, from the police and from the university — what one should do when this incident happened?" he said.

"Any incident that affects the safety of any of our students is cause for concern," interim deputy vice-chancellor Eileen McLaughlin said in a statement at the time of the attack.
