Young people in Australia are drinking less in general, but young girls are drinking more. Teenage girls are also struggling to sleep.
Before and during the pandemic, most teens didn’t eat enough vegetables or manage 60 minutes of exercise a day . “The way I see it is that both sleep problems and alcohol use are often co-morbid with mental health problems like depression and anxiety,” said lead author Dr Lauren Gardner, research fellow at the Matilda Centre for Research Excellence in Mental Health and Substance Use in the Faculty of Medicine and Health.
Teesson suggested that the findings were a reflection of girls trying to find ways to cope with their distress.While sleep disorders are associated with puberty and changes to the brain and circadian rhythms, the combination of poor sleep and increased alcohol use suggested girls were struggling more generally as a result of the pandemic.
