Teen climate activist Greta Thunberg named Time's Person of the Year

Greta Thunberg, the teen activist from Sweden who has urged immediate action to address a global climate crisis, has been namedfor starting an environmental campaign in August 2018 which initially involved her skipping school and camping out in front of the Swedish Parliament to demand action.Her actions triggered a global youth-led protest movement against world leaders for their perceived inaction on climate change.

Thunberg becomes the youngest Person of the Year ever, and only the fifth female in the 90-plus yearshas been handing out the honour. Men have been chosen 66 times, groups of people 21 times, and non-human entities twice .

"In the 16 months since [her first protest], she has addressed heads of state at the UN, met with the Pope, sparred with the President of the United States and inspired 4 million people to join the global climate strike on September 20, 2019, in what was the largest climate demonstration in human history.

"Margaret Atwood compared her to Joan of Arc. After noticing a hundred-fold increase in its usage, lexicographers at Collins Dictionary named Thunberg’s pioneering idea, climate strike, the word of the year."
