Dylan Edwards is unlikely to play again before Origin II, opening the door for James Tedesco to retain the No.1 jersey in Melbourne – and even for a potential series decider.

James Tedesco will have every chance to retain the NSW No.1 jersey for the rest of the Origin series after it emerged Dylan Edwards’s quad injury will keep him sidelined for up to three weeks.

Should the Blues upset Queensland in Wednesday’s opening game at Accor Stadium, it will be difficult for an underdone Edwards to break into a winning team. Should they lose, coach Michael Maguire will have to decide whether to drop Tedesco for Edwards, who will not have run a ball in anger for over a month, with the series on the line.

Dylan Edwards watches on at training on Monday while standing with Blues’ footy manager Frank Ponissi.“He strained the lower part of his quad muscle, just where all the muscles merge into the quadriceps tendon, and the MRI showed the muscles weren’t damaged but there was a strain,” Blues doctor Nathan Gibbs told this masthead.

Panthers co-captain Isaah Yeo said he felt shattered for his good friend and teammate, who was only days out from realising his childhood dream, and insisted the fact he chose to remain in camp said a lot about the man.Nick Moir/SMH
