Mark Taylor's astounding ball-tampering claim. 9WWOS Cricket

“Was this the first time? There’s no doubt this ‘ball management’ has been going on for a long time, and I dare say every country is either doing it or working out how to do it, but there’s a line somewhere between ball management and ball tampering.

Healy is in no doubt that Cape Town wasn't the first time the team had tampered with the ball, and believes a more thorough enquiry would have resulted in more players coming under the microscope.“A lot of them got lucky in an enquiry that was very specific to this incident.”that since the Cape Town Test reverse swing has “died” in Test cricket, with teams “extremely cautious about what they can do.”According to Taylor, the obsession with reverse swing was at the root of the troubles.

“They got too carried away with reverse swing and forgot about orthodox, normal swing bowling that’s been around for 140 years.”Chappell, who captained one of Australia’s finest pace bowlers in Dennis Lillee, says teams have moved too far away from the basics of fast bowling, while another element of the game also took a back seat as reverse swing took over.

“The other aspect that has suffered through the fixation with reverse swing is spin bowling. I think that’s taken a bit of a back seat because they’re trying to get the old ball ready for the quicks.”

The current infatuation with reverse swing is rooted in the 2005 Ashes series. It showed how late reverse swing at pace could take down a champion batsmen. It should have been disciplined then instead it's contest levelling was celebrated, condoning other countries to follow.

Well I guess everytime the ball is bounce thrown in its really ball tampering specially when most players can throw the distance and they are actually trying to get reverse but that's every team they all do it

It was probably going on between 1994 and 1999

Why did Dwarf Warner field at midoff with fake tape on his hands but moved when they worked out SA TV was on to them....

How about we just look at the film of the ball being polished by fieldsmen in the proceeds ng 12 months - would be hard to work out what was happening

Cricketers have been throwing the ball into the pitch surrounds for years to try and scuff up the ball 'naturally', especially in ODI games
