Tasmanians are being told to expect a very wet weekend and to prepare their properties for potential flash flooding as storms move in from South Australia.

A significant low-pressure system developing over south-eastern South Australia will move across Tasmania over the weekend.

A significant low-pressure system that is building over south-eastern South Australia today is expected to deepen and move to Tasmania over the weekend. " is going to be at the north of the state this evening … then starting to move more broadly across the north and west on Saturday and by the end of Saturday throughout the state," meteorologist Jenny Horvat said.

There is a severe weather warning for damaging winds averaging 50 to 60 kilometres per hour expected across the western and north-west coast on early Saturday morning, with damaging gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour.
