Taiwan will receive 66 new American-made F-16 fighter jets in the biggest arms sale to the self-governing island in years. 9News

The new F-16s, known as the F-16V or Viper, will be made at Lockheed Martin factories in Greenville, South Carolina, and Fort Worth, Texas.

When the deal was formally approved last year, it was greeted with strong bipartisan backing from Congress, including from the Democratic chairman and the leading Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Four US-made F-16 fighter jets cross the sky during a drill near the Suao navy harbour in Yilan, eastern Taiwan.Beijing responded by condemning the visit while sending its fighter jets past the median point in the Taiwan Strait, the relatively narrow stretch of water separating Taiwan from mainland China.

The deal comes as China has been increasing pressure on Taiwan, which Beijing considers to be an inseparable part of its territory. Australian military analyst Peter Layton of the Griffith Asia Institute said the F-16 sale could actually help stabilise the Taiwan situation, at least from a military standpoint.

A Pentagon report in May 2019 warned that Taiwan's traditional military advantages over Beijing in the event of a cross-strait conflict were eroding in the face of China's continued efforts to modernise its armed forces.

How a school in PNG became a diplomatic weapon for ChinaA photo of Xi Jinping greets students at the entrance to the $28 million school in Papua New Guinea. ErykBagshaw CCP is not friend of democracy, human rights or rule of law. The only friends China has is the dollar and the euro. We need to stop their access to our economy, culture and live style. ErykBagshaw The Chinese money is sugarcoating poison which buys political influences and gnaws our universal values. Decouple from China, and stop trading values in response to coercion from now on before we become too vulnerable to their capitals.
