Taiwan’s KMT party has recruited the son of former nationalist general Chiang Kai-shek to reinvent itself for local elections.

| Taiwan’s main opposition party is pinning hopes of a political revival on the young descendant of Chiang Kai-shek, the revolutionary Chinese leader who fled to the island 73 years ago.on Saturday, the outcome of which will influence the later presidential poll. At 43, he is breaking the mould of Taiwan’s conservative Kuomintang which usually nominates older candidates for key seats.

Despite being relatively inexperienced in politics, Mr Chiang is one of the leading candidates fronted by the KMT which is expected to win more local government seats off the ruling Democratic Progressive Party on Saturday. The Kuomintang fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing a civil war to the communists and ruled Taiwan. When martial law ended and the island nation became a democracy in 1978, the Kuomintang’s leadership was challenged by the DPP.

Polling suggests the DPP could lose more seats to the KMT. It traditionally does not do as well in local elections as at the presidential level, although Mr Harrison said it was heading into Saturday’s vote in a stronger position than it did in 2018.e will have a bearing on the 2024 presidential race and future leadership candidates
