Sydneysiders book for Byron in droves but plans could be thrown into disarray

Byron Bay is used to being at the centre of debates about gentrification, commercialisation and culture - now it is the focus of disagreement over when to restart tourism in NSW.

Gabriel Ridgley-Hewitt, pictured with Maria Gracia Gonzalez, said he did not support barring Sydney visitors from the region.Mr Ridgley-Hewitt has not had a COVID-19 vaccine, and expressed scepticism about its benefits. A Stayz spokeswoman said there were only three houses left to book in the Byron Bay region for the New Year’s Eve long weekend and “neighboring destinations like Brunswick Heads and Lennox Heads are completely booked for the same time period”.Despite restrictions being forecast to ease as soon as October 11, tourists are being cautious about venturing to Byron next month; only 15 per cent of properties listed on Stayz were booked in the week beginning October 18.

Mr Jones estimated 75 per cent of visitors to Byron Bay in the past 12 months were from Greater Sydney, and it was inevitable that they would bring COVID-19 to the area.
