BREAKING The 2020 Sydney to Hobart race has been cancelled for the first time in its history, with organisers admitting Sydney's coronavirus outbreak made it impossible to stage.

Earlier on Saturday, Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein said the future of the 2020 race remained with organisers but he admitted it would be hard to go ahead with it now, with no quarantine exception to be made for race entrants.

It comes after NSW Health announced a further 23 COVID-19 cases on Saturday morning, prompting the state government to enforce a lockdown in the Northern Beaches area from 5pm on Saturday until midnight on Wednesday. That came after the Tasmanian government initially shut borders to anyone who lives on Sydney's Northern Beaches or visited the hotspot since 11 December, and reiterated no exemptions would be made for the Sydney to Hobart fleet.
