Seven Sydney schools, including five primary schools, have less than five square metres of play space per student | jordsbaker nigelgladstone

Dozens of Sydney schools are falling short of minimum play space requirements, with seven - including four primary schools - having less than five square metres per child.

"This school involved the re-purposing of existing facilities and addressed existing site constraints through the provision of a rooftop sports court and access to a full-sized basketball court adjacent to the school," the department said in a statement.Of the 31 primary schools on the list, Chatswood Public School has the least play space. The rapidly growing school has had its numbers increase by more than 50 per cent since 2012 and last year enrolments reached almost 1300.

The primary schools with the least space also included Woollahra , Neutral Bay and Campsie , a popular school in south-west Sydney designated for rapid development.

JordsBaker Nigelgladstone Schools need to start thinking vertically. I’ve seen too many schools in my area expand via demountables which sit there for years costing money. Re-purposed, stacked shipping containers are a good option for classrooms which frees up land for recreation.

Air pollution reaches 15 times the hazardous level in Sydney | Sky News AustraliaAir pollution in Sydney has reached 15 times the hazardous level after strong winds dragged smoke from a nearby fire at Gospers Mountain into the Sydney basin. \n\nNew South Wales RFS deputy Commissioner Rob Rogers told Sky News on Tuesday the Gospers Mountain fire was becoming “more active'. \n\n“The smoke should start pushing out of Sydney fairly soon, unfortunately it’ll head to the north so those communities will get more of that smoke in toward the Central Coast, Newcastle area,' he said. \n\nThe RFS said fire danger ratings would be in place on Tuesday for the Greater Sydney, Greater Hunter, Illawarra, Central Ranges and Southern Ranges regions, up from Monday’s 'very high' classification.\n\nA total fire ban remains in place for north-west NSW. \n\nImage: News Corp Australia And where are we building another Airport? The bulk of the smoke isn't from the main fire, it's from the associated back burning, which has now doubled, almost tripled the size of the fire. Glad I had the day off from flying today 🚁
