Sydney's Theatre Royal set for facelift in push to attract top shows | msccummins

The revamp of Sydney's Theatre Royal in the heart of the city's shopping district has been given the greenlight as part of a $170 million redevelopment of the Harry Seidler-designed MLC Centre.

It will be the next step in the renaissance of Martin Place, said to be the heart of the city. Opposite the MLC Centre construction is underway for the $380 million metro station which will include two new commercial towers to be built above. "The integrity of Harry’s [Seidler's] original architecture is to be re-established and contrasted with new geometries of internally illuminated glass. The MLC Centre will become the glowing core of the centre of Sydney," Ms Seidler said.

Dexus head of city retail development Amanda Pieriboni said luxury retail was gaining traction in the CBD, despite the weaker market conditions. Dexus recently opened the new flagship store for upmarket jeweller Tiffany & Co in its nearby 175 King Street development.
