The city’s population growth is rate is set to plummet with international migration to Australia effectively halted and the birth rate likely to dip due to heightened economic uncertainty.

A migration slump following the coronavirus outbreak could temporarily shrink Sydney’s population and leave it at more than 200,000 fewer people than expected by 2025, raising doubts about the timetable for major infrastructure projects such as WestConnex stage three and the Western Harbour Tunnel.

Macquarie University demographer Professor Nick Parr said a temporary reduction in Sydney's birth rate is likely. In the event of a V-shaped recession the SGS Economics and Planning report forecasts Sydney’s population will be 100,000 lower by 2025 than expected prior to the epidemic. If the downturn is more prolonged the population is forecast to be 210,000 lower by 2025 than it would otherwise have been.

Subdued population growth will take a toll on demand for new housing construction which is an important driver of economic growth.a wave of transport projects would be part of a “silver bullet” to revive the NSW economyBut Mr Rawnsley said slower population growth, coupled with rising unemployment, would affect the cost-benefit equation for big projects due to roll out in coming years. That raises questions about the timetable for their construction.

Yikes

Good

And the problem is?

Immigrants are having more children than Australian citizens. We spend billions of tax dollars on immigration and welcoming people from every nationality, but we can’t take care of our own..? There are no incentives for Australians to have family’s when life is so unpredictable.

Divorce rates will increase requiring more housing

Perhaps young people may be able to afford to buy a house

Relax. Why do you always have to be growing. Let’s just smell the roses for a little while.

Too many brown people

best news of the day!

Beauty...thanks Rona

Moving around a silent Sydney has re-lit a smouldering desire to live a life less crowded. Mike and Gladys ruined this city with hyper immigration.

Good.

Yes! We dont need anymore Asians here or middle east people! ( am I racist? )

But whenever we end up isolated and stuck at home the birth rate always explodes

It’s the same story world over... so what’s the news here?

I'm not surprised...it is too expensive to live there

“Plummet” how embarrassing that these sort of tabloid speak headlines are still used today

Australian wildlife will be saved .

How about encouraging white Australian birth rate just like Sweden . Australian population start to look Asian

Thank god less Asians

Oh maybe it will be easier to drive to work and not get there riddled with anxiety

Economic uncertainty isn't the only reason I'm not having children.

It might end up making the place affordable.

This is so overdue ! We cannot have never ending growth in economics & population.

“The birth rate likely to dip due to heightened economic uncertainty.” And to being locked at home with whatever kids you already have.

Dumb ass article, people around the world are seeing how Australia has mitigated covid risks and shown itself to be one of the best countries to live in. Migration is gonna explode after this.

Quality of life set to rise for commoners.. how will we cope?

And how is that a bad thing. About time the government cared more about the disadvantaged and homeless then immigrants

The planet cannot sustain endless population growth! The flora and fauna will benefit! Sustainability not growth!

High five 🖐

oz_jacko Less taxpayers alarms govt. But is it actually beneficial?

Good news!

I stuff up on twitter all the time.. but I am not writing for a daily newspaper.. growth is rate is set

Might be able to get a seat on the train.

adamjsims Let's Make Australia Australian Again. Let's have a country where Australians are born here.

Excellent! Cut the infrastructure budget we don’t need it now!

Good. Might be more jobs to go around .

FYI justthink1

Don't you think it will increase due to heightened fucking?

Well I’m expecting a lockdown baby boom around Xmas

Birth rate will drop due to parents being locked up with 2 or more kids for more than a month. I'd be surprised is many parents ever have sex again after that trauma.............

Gladys spent billions on light rail in the middle of George St They r crawling n so empty So much money n so much damage When it rains George St track gets flooded so rail would be grounded

Exactly what is needed.

Hallelujah! It's about time.👍🎉

right on cue vested interests like developers r fanning fear of less pop growth So what? Look at Mumbai Manila n Bangkok it is hellish to live there as they r too crowded Wuhan n NY have d worst pandemic outbreak as they r densely pop

What about the surge of babies in 9 months from all the stay at home bonking?

'Can you think of any problem in any area of human endeavor on any scale, from microscopic to global, whose long-term solution is in any demonstrable way aided, assisted, or advanced by further increases in population, locally, nationally, or globally?' Naah!!

Finally some good news

Hurrah!!!

MattWadeSMH Good news for house prices. Less demand for power supply in hot summers. Less panic buying from newcomers. The population growth engineered by GladysB and the Greater Sydney Commission was unsustainable anyway

Well..as the virus is spread through urban density, it’s a good thing

Good

Wasn't Sydney's population growth unsustainable anyway...

We probably should have not more than 4 million on the planet. See Michael Moore's new documentary which is FREE on YouTube. Moore is only the producer not the host. Good stuff. Housing prices might be affordable for the young. Investors may pull out of the market - no tenants?

More opportunity for Australians and better job opportunities, more education spots ava at University etc . Knock on effect is bigger and better. What our politicians failed to address & do the pandemic has done .

Some rare good news. Good for our quality of life, food and water security, housing affordability, and access to public hospitals.

Or the birth rate will go up because partners are spending more time together, and you know, babymagic :)

Thank God

Great news!! Let’s hope it allows first home buyers into the market.

But who is going to fill the millions of little boxes?

that would be good news I would love immigration to Australia to stop completely auspol

The masses cheer stabilization of growth. The governments we vote for force it on us.

Awesome! We have been growing too fast. We will be fine.

Good.

I'm kind of thinking birth rate will increase this year!

Great news...lets MAKE AUSTRALIA SUSTAINABLE AGAIN

HAVE WHITE BABIES

That is a good thing.

Good

House prices 📉

Can brisbane have a reduction too please?

lnp will deflate the economy by 2m workers. Happy to take their GDP contribution, taxes, and fleece them for visa fees in good times, ignoring them now will tank economic recovery growth. insiders abcnews 10NewsFirst mkr MarriedAtFirstSight

Migration halted? Hallelujah! Then, maybe we can return to a saner state, and ordinary young Australians can see a way ahead to be able to afford to buy houses; then they might start thinking about having children.

Fantastic

Population growth is the biggest problem our world faces so I’m not sad about this at all!

Good news story finally from the SMH

Property Council of Australia will fix it.

A much needed fall.

Some good news!

Thank god for immigration stop. Time to recalculate who is coming to this country and what we want how populations to be in coming decade

Doubt it but if it happens will be a significant benefit for the city.

Positive. This will mean a reduction in house prices to affordable levels and better employment prospects for existing residents.

That’s the best news I have read in weeks 😄

Guess the real estate developers will start to worry

University of Sydney urges staff to apply for JobKeeperIn an email to staff, University of Sydney vice chancellor said the university estimates a shortfall of $470 million, due in part to the loss of thousands of full fee-paying Chinese students The rot at the universities set in way before coronavirus threw a grenade into money-for-degrees corporatised international business model. It seems these Chinese students' education was a waste... Perhaps they should cut back in the ludicrous perks afforded to the academic staff - will then not notice the shortfall.
