"In the event of high winds, like in previous years, the City of Sydney will assess the conditions with Fireworks director Fortunato Foti," a council spokesperson said. "We encourage all visitors to Sydney for New Year's Eve to be mindful of the conditions and how they could impact on their health."Temperatures of up to 33 degrees are forecast for Sydney on Tuesday, with maximums of 41 degrees in Parramatta and 43 degrees in Penrith.
"In addition, the Bureau of Meteorology has forecast high winds with a southerly change on New Year's Eve, which pose too big a risk to the health and safety of our community. "It is unfortunate that we won't be able to celebrate New Year's Eve with our community. This decision has not been made lightly and council apologises that it will not be able to deliver the popular free event. Council is making a $10,000 donation to the NSW Rural Fire Service to support their fantastic work," Cr Dwyer said.
Campbelltown City Council has cancelled its fireworks display at Koshigaya Park but will continue with planned entertainment and rides. Fireworks at Rowland Reserve in Bayview on the northern beaches have also been cancelled, while those at Manly and Dee Why will go ahead.Split views on fireworks displays
WTAF! Just what Sydney needs. A massive fireworks display in the midst of out of control wildfires, the worst in its history, and a total fire ban.
WTF?!
it goes ahead for money interest Without fireworks there wont be revelers n bars would be empty Dumping lockout laws was money interest
utterly shameful.
Excellent decision. Life goes on. Just as it does after a terrorist attack. Don't let the bedwetters softer our national resolve.
Cool and normal thejuicemedia
Hypocrites at its best, there is a total fire ban but the FIRE works will go ahead. Only in Ashtraya! Double standards!
Idiocy of the highest order. This is completely disrespectful to those who have lost their lives in the fires. The Million$$$ spent on fireworks should be going to people who have lost their homes and/or jobs.
That was your 1 x chance to drag this leadership mess back from the brink. Just a little bit of respect to all affected but no....
Unfortunately there are pros and cons with this. Some ppl won’t be concerned about the fires and want entertainment for NYE and perhaps some who have been personally affected and suffered loss will see this expensive display in the city as unwarranted. Jury’s out!
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
CloverMoore we live in a time of weak & disappointing leadership. Sydney Council had an opportunity to buck this sad trend by cancelling our NYE fireworks. Instead it chose to hide behind RFS - as if the decision to proceed with fireworks at a time of fire emergencies was RFS’
Sensible decision that won't please the grandstanding folk trying to stop the fireworks, but who will still watch them.
Light em up with ya drip torches!
GladysB ScottMorrisonMP newspoll A bunch of incompetent, inhumane, disgraceful Crap! What hypocrites you want to show the world how amazing we are, meanwhile the whole country is on Fire!, Millions of Animals have died and are dying, the world is watching & in total disbelief
I like the bit where you tell us some suburbs have been cancelled. Are we able to choose the suburbs
And if something goes pair shaped?
Don’t play with fire kiddies
Sydney fireworks will go ahead no matter what. The optics of the cancellation would show this government’s lack of action and lack of policy on climate change to the world. It would shame them no end. Our ScottFromMarketing won’t let that happen full stop
