The QVB shopping centre, like much of Sydney's CBD, is a shadow of its former self in terms of bustling crowds, but as the festive season approaches, there is optimism about what's ahead.

Just a little further down on the ground level, another cafe, Parisi sits with its tables cleared and food cabinets empty, as a trickle of people walk past.

"It was really bad when we first opened up but it's starting to get closer to Christmas and things are getting better with numbers with COVID in general, so we're starting to pick up.She said cafes like the Metropole rely on regulars and the fact that office workers are slowly returning to workplaces is helping.

Troy Parry is the general manager of tourism services at Trippas White, and is on deck at Esquire to oversee preparations.Esquire will reopen Wednesday to Saturday for up to 50 patrons at a time, and Mr Parry says it has been a time for adaptation. He says the outlook is that things will come back stronger, but it won't be the same — more people might return to offices but it might not be the old model of five days a week.He says it's been like the SARS outbreak in 2004 when it was a time to work on polishing its restaurants.

Vicinity Group owns the QVB says traffic across the property has fallen to as low as 10 per cent but is now back to about 50 per cent.

Even though Sydney hasn’t been under any kind of lockdown for months, businesses in the CBD are struggling or still closed. Meanwhile Morrison is constantly calling for Melbourne to open up/ease restrictions as though that would save businesses during a pandemic.

As I work , over looking QVB . I see the green dome roofing are rusted & needed some paint work

they need to cut rent by 50% n become a discount market
