Sydney New Year's Eve fireworks 2019: Crowds flock to Sydney Harbour despite bushfires and smoke

People were turned away from Mrs Macquarie's Chair after it reached capacity at 5pm, and the east Circular Quay area was full and closed off at 6pm. The Dawes Point vantage point filled up just after 8.30pm.

Despite objections from the general public and some politicians, the fireworks over the harbour went ahead as planned, after getting the blessing of the Rural Fire Service to be exempt from a total fire ban. "The New Year's Eve celebration in Sydney has nothing to do with the fire activity down the South Coast" he said.

The events that were exempt were "organised, focused on community events by reputable authorities and entities," Mr Fitzsimmons said.

The money that the City of Sydney spent on the fireworks should be donated to the bushfire relief instead. Shame on you!

I know it’s 2 late for a refund bt surely they could’ve bn delayed till sometime next year after fire season is over. Do it as a recognition to honour volunteers and those we’ve lost and those affected by the fires. Could’ve asked churches to ring their bells out at 12am instead!

These should have been THE ONLY fireworks this year! Money for the midnight fireworks should have been spent to hire airplanes to bring to Sydney the thousands of people who fled to the beach & all those who lost everything because of the fires to share these fireworks with us.
