Australia’s largest mosque has cancelled its traditional Friday prayer and chosen instead to hold prayers in the park for peace in Palestine.

“This Friday, 20 October 2023, Lakemba Mosque will be closed for Friday Jummah only,” the mosque confirmed in a statement.Lakemba Mosque is the largest in Australia: NCA NewsWire / Damian ShawFriday prayers are the main weekly worship in Islam, likened to a Sunday service in Christianity.

The mosque’s decision comes as more than a dozen public protests are planned to be held in Greater Sydney over the next seven days. “We aware of at this stage up to 17 protest events not just in the city, not just in the CBD but other parts of the Sydney metropolitan area and outer areas,” NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb told reporters on Friday.

People would be free to exercise their right to protest peacefully and police would be working with community organisers to ensure no events were taken over by troublemakers, officers said.
