If all trial operations run without a hitch the Chatswood to Sydenham section of the metro line will open in August

The central section of Sydney’s new metro rail line has begun testing a full service timetable before an expected public opening in August.

The rest of the planned metro rail line, which runs from Bankstown to Sydenham, will see the popular T3 line shut for a year for conversion. Commuters will have to take buses to get to Sydenham to access the metro. The government says once the project is complete metro passengers will get from Martin Place to Waterloo in six minutes, from Sydneham to Macquarie University in 33 minutes from Chatswood to Central in 15 minutes .

NSW premier Chris Minns said the trials were a new beginning for Sydney, and linked the metro project to the state’s acute housing crisis.
