A Sydney man is using an unconventional method to help feed his local community amid Australia's cost of living crisis - but it comes with high stakes.

Michael*, 46, has been giving away produce and pantry staples to people in the city's inner west over the past six months.

A few months later Michael caught the attention of a fruit and vegetable vendor while dumpster diving at a supermarket next door. He said he was killing two birds with one stone by saving food that was still edible from landfill while helping feed the community amid rising cost of living pressures."I feel good that I can help in any way I can to reduce their grocery budget and help move short dated or excess stock, the food gets taken pretty quickly."

"I and many others have now been slapped with a ban from shopping malls because management do not like the public going through their bins," he said. "Unfortunately, it is difficult for us to outline the legalities as it is dependent on circumstances. A person may be committing an offence i.e. trespass or stealing if they were to access private property or a secure bin," a spokesperson said.
