Police will charge a man with blackmail under investigations into a suspected New South Wales data breach believed to have put the personal information of more than one million people at risk.

NSW Police have arrested a 46-year-old man who will be charged with blackmail in relation to an alleged data breach of customer details held by 15 licensed venues across the state and in the ACT.

Cybercrime detectives on Thursday evening said a man, 46, had been arrested in relation to the incident at a home in Sydney’s Fairfield West, to be later charged with count of blackmail. "We have been working with our state and federal partners and also international partners in order to take down that website,” Detective Chief Superintendent Grant Taylor said ahead of the man’s arrest.

The company could not elaborate on the suspected data breach citing the ongoing police investigation but said it had communicated with its clients and was working to establish how the incident occurred.
