More than a decade after they stopped operating, Sydney Harbour Bridge’s last cash toll booths will soon be completely removed, a process that will take about 18 months and cost $20 million | Rabe9

More than a decade after they stopped operating, Sydney Harbour Bridge’s last cash toll booths will soon be completely removed.

While Transport Minister Andrew Constance said doing away with the booths, which were last modified in the 1970s, would improve traffic flow, the work is expected to create disruptions until late 2021. When electronic tolling began on the bridge in early 2009, Roads and Maritime Services said there was not a set timetable for the removal of the old booths but it could take up to a year., when the government indicated those on the northern side would come down in 2017.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge with little traffic as seen from the Shangri-La Hotel during peak hour during coronavirus lockdown in April. The RMS has previously said the works could cause the temporary closure of one or more lanes on the bridge, while local residents have been warned of construction noise between the High Street overpass and Fitzroy Street at Kirribilli.

Rabe9 What a $20 million rip off

Rabe9 shouldn't we spend $4m on a feasibility study first?

Rabe9 At $20m to remove them, why not just leave them there, put a sign up, call it a museum and start charging $2 for entry?

Rabe9 What, they're still there? I thought this was one of those 'Sydney Then and Now' posts.

Rabe9 Why should it cost so many millions ? If it were in the private sector, it will be removed at night and sold for a profit by selling scrap ; something fishy.

GladysB please don't tell me the contractor is a mate of someone in your party or someone that donates to your party? 20 million is ridiculous!

Rabe9 Why $20 million?

Rabe9 This will blow out to $1.6 billion, take 6 years and result in the Harbour bridge being rebuilt.

Rabe9 $20,000,000 would fix a lot of potholes!

virgotweet Rabe9 Just like toll collectors had up until 10 years ago, somebody is holding out their hand for one last time. In this instance, for 20million

Rabe9 Journos should dig deeper on this one (no pun intended) sounds like some serious $$$$ changing hands

Rabe9 Lol leave them there, save money jeez NSW stop being so ridiculous, first that covid statue and now this.

Rabe9 This is scandalous. $20mil & 18 months to REMOVE small, defunct structures😳⁉️ Imagine this is Singapore or Seoul : they’d be gone & area made over in 10 days max. Oz productivity truly makes us a global laughing stock. Little wonder we are The Land Of Missed Opportunities🙄🇦🇺🙄

Rabe9 I’ll do it for ten

Rabe9 Is it the same mob that built the Light Rail..judging by that huge cost..😏

Rabe9 I'm sorry. This is a knockdown and repave. It's not even two way section of road. The only logistics are a couple of nights traffic diversion. Madness.

Rabe9 Just considering the whopping $20M to knockdown a few toll booths & redirect some services for all intents & purposes this reeks of gross daylight robbery. Is GladysB going to publicly release details of contract & beneficiary company? After all we pay for it. JodiMcKayMP

Rabe9 When we were kids, every Friday night on the way to our grandparents place, we used to fight to throw the money in the tray.

Rabe9 Someone is having a good day 🤑🤑🤑

Rabe9 Probably $19 million for all the compliance paperwork and all the inductions required and $1 million to do the work

Rabe9 Why is cost somuch

53keithm Rabe9 $20 million to remove the booths sounds exorbitant for a $mall fee i will simply flick a few switches and turn the bloody system off

Rabe9 Really, $20m to tear down the remaining toll booths!! Who's doing the job - a Liberal donor?

Rabe9 Wow! Who got the contract? That’s crazy. I’d do for 50$ an hour and have It done in a day.

Rabe9 18 months! 20 million! Whoever agreed to that is a moron.

Rabe9 “A Transport for NSW spokesman described the work as “a complex process” because underground utilities would need to be relocated.”

Rabe9 The bridge has already been paid for...why are we paying for it again

Rabe9 Clearly hasn't gone to tender..... What joke!

Rabe9 Has the bridge been paid for yet?

Rabe9 . I’ll do it for half that much.

Rabe9 18 months!

Rabe9 I'll remove them if you like, for the bargain price of $1 million. 20 million? Goodness me. Who thought that was a good deal?

Rabe9 Get those lefties to tear them down and save us a few bucks
