“It was always my intention to get it back to the Swans and to Buddy.“ Swans fan Alex Wheeler was in the right place at the right time on Friday night when Lance Franklin kicked his 1000th AFL goal. Today he returned the match ball to the superstar. | ...

The ball Lance Franklin kicked for his 1000th goal is back in the possession of the Sydney Swans superstar, with the man who marked it receiving a swag of gifts from the club in exchange for handing it over.

Wheeler had a few bumps and bruises to show for his effort, having tumbled over several rows of plastic seating to secure the ball - and a story he’ll be telling and retelling for years to come. “From that point on there were so many people rushing to the fence, which sort of probably helped me get to the ball - everyone was filming.

“It was always my intention to get it back to the Swans and to Buddy. It’s going to be no good to me, I don’t have a pool room to put it up in unfortunately. It was good to get in contact with the Swans and get it back to them.
