The activation of new facial recognition cameras in Perth and Brisbane raises concerns about how the technology is being quietly introduced by Australian governments to monitor citizens.

It is also considered a powerful national security tool, with the Australian Border Force using it at airport passport checkpoints."There is what is termed the 'chilling effect of surveillance'," she said.

For example, a majority of San Francisco's board of legislators voted last month to"put the genie back in the bottle" and ban the use of the technology by its agencies, including police. "It's psychologically unhealthy when people know they're being watched in every aspect of the public realm, on the streets, in parks," San Francisco Supervisor Aaron Peskin said.China is building a digital dictatorship to exert control over its 1.4 billion citizens. For some,"social credit" will bring privileges — for others, punishment.

University of WA law school Associate Professor Julia Powles said we needed to seriously think about and debate what kind of cities we were creating if our public spaces could be monitored this way. Both Dr Mann and Associate Professor Powles said there was little evidence that the technology prevented crime.

Nothing to hear de nothing to worry about. Of course the ABC doesn’t want criminals being caught. They would rather harbourr them and call it freedom of the press.

The cameras don't contain facial recognition technology, it's the AI integration in the software of the security server that's running them that does the recognition.... This headline is like saying your eyes can do something without a brain attached... 🤨

No point being paranoid about it, there are already ways of tracking people quite accurately without looking at their face & when 5G phones are common your ID + location will be knowable to within a very small distance. Not a reversible phenomena in cities, go bush otherwise.

seriously ABC, dont commit crime nothing to fear. Roll it out everywhere.

Excellent, great idea.

If you have nothing to hide, whats the problem ? However the ABC appears to have lots hidden these days. 🤨

Hoodies are the natural reaction to increased surveillance. & I predict they’ll be more prevalent, the more surveillance increases. I may even start wearing them myself! Big Brother Sucks!

I’m going to start wearing a hijab and sunnies

Construction slowdown worsens, more jobs are lost and new orders dry upThere is no respite from the bad news in the construction sector, with a respected industry survey pointing to the sharpest decline in activity in six years. So much for any 'ScoMo effect' post election. How're you gonna help the LNP try to blame this on the ALP? Will be interesting to see how this is Labor's fault. Time to look a those big renovation plans, perfect timing, cheap rates and competitive (keen) building companies. May be one of the best investment you can make at the moment if you also plan on hanging onto the property for at least another 2 years. 🏡🔨🖌️🧱
