Opinion: Super is paid on annual leave and sick leave, why not parental leave?

If you have been tempted to make major holiday plans this month, you’re not alone. The federal government has revealed international travel may soon be back on the cards, on a state-by-state basis, provided vaccination targets are reached.

If you were to fall ill and need time away from work to recover or even choose to take annual leave when those borders open you will still receive your salary and superannuation will continue to be paid into your nominated account. There have been many proposals to expand or change parental leave with tangible economic benefits. Earlier this month on Father’s Day, the Grattan Institute released modelling showing the current Commonwealth parental leave allowance should be expanded to 26 weeks from the current 20 weeks, including a six week “use it or lose it” component for each parent and 12 weeks to share.
