From the secret lives of animals to the imaginary life of a First Lady; from 19th-century California to 80s Glasgow; tales of lost words, queer love and messy families — these are our favourite books of 2020.

It's an utterly delicious concept for a book: what if Hillary Rodham had never married Bill Clinton?

In what has maybe been the strangest year in American politics yet, Rodham will make you wonder what might have been. CNIn The Lying Life of Adults, Ferrante returns to Naples, the setting of her hugely popular Neapolitan novels. This book is worth reading just to meet Vittoria, the estranged sister of Giovanna's father, who is wild and vulgar and vindictive and I loved her. I loved her even as she stood over the grave of her dead lover Enzo describing to her too-young niece, in graphic erotic detail, the sex they'd had. She then tells shocked yet thrilled Giovanna, "Tell your father: Vittoria said that if I don't f#$@ the way that she f#$@ed with Enzo, it's pointless for me to live.

Before this, I had never read a Hawaiian novel. Yes, I had read books where characters visited the islands, marvelled at the sands, drank a cocktail while admiring the waves, but nothing that came from there: from islands and mythologies, ancient stories and a multi-ethnic, multi-racial present.
